IZILMorocco

ⵉⵣⵉⵍIzil

Izil means pure.
It also means noble.

The word is Tamazight — the language of the people who were here before the word Morocco was. It is not a marketing adjective. It is what you call a thing that has not been diluted, and it is a high bar to put on the side of a vehicle.

The mark

A mountain, a horizon, and the sign for a free person

The Izil mark

Two ridgelines meeting over a horizon, with a peak above them and the ⵣ — the yaz — held in the middle. The yaz is the Amazigh sign for a free person. It is the letter at the centre of the word Amazigh itself, and it is the one element of the mark that is not landscape.

That is the whole idea, and it is why the same hairline runs through every page of this site: the nav underline, the divider between sections, the progress bar under the masthead, and — on a route page — the route itself. One line, doing the work.

Routes leave from Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and Tangier, and which one you leave from changes the trip more than the number of days does. The shortest multi-day route is three days; the longest is fifteen. Below that, ten excursions get you out and back between breakfast and dinner.

None of it is fixed. Every published route can be lengthened, shortened, reversed, started from a different city, or thrown out in favour of something you describe. The versions on this site exist so there is something concrete to argue with.

How a route gets built

Written the way you would want it described to you

  • The driving is stated, not buried

Morocco is large and the interesting parts are far apart. Every written itinerary says which day is the longest, on the page, before you book — because finding that out afterwards is how a good trip gets remembered badly.

  • One vehicle, one driver-guide

The routes here are written as private departures: your party, one vehicle, and somebody who lives on the road you are driving. Local guides come in where they earn their fee twice over — Fes, above all.

  • The photography is Izil’s own

Nothing on this site is stock. Where Izil has not photographed a route, the page says so and lists it plainly instead of borrowing somebody else’s picture of somewhere that looks similar.

  • No figure is printed until it is confirmed

Prices, party sizes, driving hours and distances all show a visible marker until Izil has set them. A placeholder that looks like a number is not a placeholder — it is a quotation somebody will hold you to.

Still to come

In Izil’s own words

Who started it, how long it has been running, who is behind the wheel, and why they do it this way. That account has to come from Izil — so this page waits rather than inventing one.
